The Importance Of Saving Mobile Data
In India, we typically opt for a prepaid mobile plan that limits our daily data usage (eg 1 GB, 1.5 GB or 2 GB); consequently, once we surpass our allotted data, our data speeds are significantly reduced.
By saving your data usage you can:
- Save on additional recharges
- Access the web throughout the day
- Reduce unnecessary non-usage occurring in the background
- Increase your phone's performance
Making minor adjustments within your settings can create a large difference.
1. Turn Off Your Mobile Data When Not In Use
This seems straightforward, yet many people forget to do this.
When you are not actively using the internet:
- Turn off your mobile data
- Or activate airplane mode
This should become habitual; after each use of any of these applications, simply turn data off.
2. Use Wi-Fi Whenever Possible
If you are at home or work where there is available Wi-Fi, utilise it as opposed to utilising mobile data.
Examples include:
- Downloading large files through Wi-Fi
- Updating apps via Wi-Fi
- Streaming movies/web series via Wi-Fi
These type of options will save daily data usage.
Limit Of the Amount of Data Used on Your Smartphone
Go to:
Settings → Network & Internet → Data Usage → Set a Data Limit
Once you are there you can set the following:
Set Warning When at 1 GB
Set Limit at 1.5 GB
Once you reach your limit mobile data will automatically turn off. This feature is very useful for those on an extremely limited data plan.
If you own an iPhone you can check the amount of data that you are using by going to:
Settings → Mobile Data
iPhones do not have the ability to stop data automatically; therefore, you will need to monitor the amount of data that you are using.
4. Turn on "Data Saver"
Both Android and iPhone have features on their phones to save data. To use the data saver option follow these steps.
On Android:
Settings → Network → Data Saver → Turn ON
On iPhone:
Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data Options → Low Data Mode
While using the data saver features on your phone the following applies:
- Background Data is Restricted
- Apps Will Use Less Internet
- Automatic Sync Will Be Less Frequent
You may not notice a huge difference with saving data when using these features but it will help in keeping you within the limits of your data plan.
5. Restrict Background Data for Your Applications
Some of your applications use a large amount of data when running in the background such as:
- YouTube
- Google Photos
You can restrict background data from certain applications.
To restrict background data from applications on an Android Device:
Settings → Apps → Select Application → Mobile Data → Disable Background Data
This means the application will use data only when you open the application.
